On one great day long ago, Sir Isaac Newton stumbled upon a great discovery, color. Ever since that day people have used color in many ways. From kids scribbling on the wall with crayons to the colors of the biggest fast food chain. Colors have many meanings and influence us in many ways. In fact, there are several ancient cultures, including the Egyptians, who practiced chromotherapy, or using colors to heal. Some psychologists believe some colors can actually alter the body’s chemistry.
Blue:
Ask a crowd what their favorite color is and most of them will say blue. In fact, it is one of my favorite colors, too. It is believed it causes the body to produce chemicals that are calming, and so, many bedrooms are blue. Also, people tend to be more productive in a blue room because they are calm and can concentrate. Over the ages, it has been associated with steadfastness, dependability, wisdom, and loyalty.
Green:
Green is everywhere. It occupies more space in the visible spectrum than any other color. It is also a very popular color with soothing, mentally relaxing, and refreshing effects. On the other hand, this color has a darker side. It is associated with one of the 7 deadly sins, envy. Also, it just happens to be the color of money.
Yellow:
Yellow is happy. Think happy smiley faces, birds, and bees. It shines with optimism, enlightenment, and happiness. Yellow also inspires creativity. A person surrounded by yellow feels optimistic because the brain actually releases serotonin (a feel good chemical in the brain) when around this color. But don’t paint your whole house yellow just yet, studies show it can cause babies to cry more and tempers can flare more. In other words, less is more. Just the right amount of yellow is the best way to use this color.
Orange:
This color causes the most controversy, it gives more love it or hate it responses than any other colors. Orange is related to warmth and energy. Orange stimulates appetite and activity, and encourages socialization. It is associated with fun times, happy, energetic days, and organic products.
Red:
Red means more to people than any other color. It is a stimulant, inherently exciting, and the amount of red is directly related to the energy level. It increases enthusiasm, stimulates energy, and encourages action and confidence. People surrounded by red find their heart beating a little faster. It is associated with life and love. Sometimes criminals will be placed in rooms painted in lighter shades such as pink. Studies show it drains energy and calms aggression.
Purple:
Purple is royalty, made for the king. It is associated with wealth, prosperity, and rich sophistication. It also stimulates brain activity used in problem solving. It is uplifting, calming, and spiritual. Teenage girls usually pick shades of this color as their favorite color.
Who knew there were so many hidden meanings behind the colors? Now this can be subjective as our culture and experiences can alter our perceptions of different colors and their meanings, but this post gives the general overview.
